Merlion Park

Merlion Park sits at the mouth of the Singapore River, right where it meets Marina Bay, and holds the original 8.6-metre Merlion statue — half lion, half fish, spouting water into the bay.

One thing to know first

NOTE

STB periodically closes the Merlion statue for cleaning, announced in advance through its media centre, and past closures have run about a fortnight. During those windows the statue is scaffolded and the water jet is off. Nobody else warns visitors about this.

It's free and open around the clock, with Marina Bay Sands, the CBD skyline and the Singapore Flyer all visible from the same short promenade, which is why it's one of the most photographed few hundred metres in the country.

A second, smaller Merlion cub statue stands just behind the main one. The park connects directly to the Helix Bridge and the Jubilee Bridge, both pedestrian routes across to the Marina Bay Sands side.

★ WORTH KNOWING

The classic “water spouting from the Merlion's mouth with Marina Bay Sands behind” photo needs an early-morning or blue-hour visit to avoid both crowds and backlighting — by mid-morning the sun sits directly behind the statue from the best vantage point, which washes out a phone photo.

the thing that ruins more Singapore days than anything else

Rain, heat, and what to do about it

Live readings and forecasts from NEA. Four days is the limit — past that, nobody is forecasting, they are showing you an average.

Beyond four days · August on a 30-year average

Southwest Monsoon

June to September

Rain drier than average

Short, sharp early-morning showers and occasional squall lines. Drier overall than the northeast wet phase.

The other good window. Rain tends to arrive early and clear, leaving usable afternoons. This is also when haze can occur, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
