A letter from the desk · P. 003
The best tour guide in Singapore is a contactless card and a plan that respects your time.

This city was built to be walked without a chaperone. Almost every attraction sits minutes from a station, the signage is in English, and the trains run to midnight. What trips people up is never the big stuff — it's which exit, which hawker centre is shut for cleaning, and when the last train leaves. So that is exactly what we compute. Everything else, this issue leaves to you.

one island.

Not one culture with variations — five that arrived at different times, for different reasons, and stayed. Two of them exist almost nowhere else on Earth.

When to come

25–32°C all year. February to April is driest; November to January brings short, heavy downpours. There is no bad season — only wet afternoons.

Daily budget

Free-and-easy runs S$70–130 a day. Hawker meals S$5–8, MRT about S$5 a day — and several of the best things are free.

Getting around

Tap any contactless card straight in. Trains run 05:30 to about midnight — we show your last one, every night.

Small rules

Tap water is safe to drink. No eating or drinking on the MRT — that one is actually fined.
