Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is Singapore's national performing arts centre, recognisable for the two spiky aluminium sunshades that give it the durian nickname locals still use more than the official name.

Box office and visitor centre noon–8pm

It houses a concert hall, a theatre, smaller studios and an outdoor stage, and the box office (daily, 12pm–8.30pm) covers everything from touring orchestras to local theatre and free public performances in the outdoor spaces. Many of the ground-floor and waterfront performances cost nothing, which is worth knowing if a ticketed show doesn't fit the schedule.

It sits directly on Marina Bay next to the Youth Olympic Park, so it's an easy add to a Marina Bay evening.

★ WORTH KNOWING

The free performances at the outdoor waterfront stage and the ground-floor Annexe Studio are listed on the centre's own site by month — worth checking before assuming a ticket is required, since many evenings run no-cost programming alongside the paid shows.

the thing that ruins more Singapore days than anything else

Rain, heat, and what to do about it

Live readings and forecasts from NEA. Four days is the limit — past that, nobody is forecasting, they are showing you an average.

Southwest Monsoon

June to September

Rain drier than average

Short, sharp early-morning showers and occasional squall lines. Drier overall than the northeast wet phase.

The other good window. Rain tends to arrive early and clear, leaving usable afternoons. This is also when haze can occur, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
