The Interlace is a private residential estate at 180 Depot Road, on the western edge of the city between Bukit Merah and Queenstown, and the reason to come is the building itself rather than anything inside it.
One thing to know first
Private property with security. Do not suggest entering the grounds, the sky terraces or the pools — a page that implies otherwise sends readers to be turned away at a guardhouse.
Completed in 2013 to a design by Ole Scheeren with OMA, it stacks thirty-one six-storey blocks into interlocking hexagons around eight open courtyards, and the stepped, sideways-lego shape reads best from a distance and from above. It won World Building of the Year in 2015. There is nothing to buy and nothing to book: it is 1,040 people's homes, the grounds are for residents, and a visit means photographing the exterior from the public roads and parks around it.
The green ridge behind it is the same one that carries the Southern Ridges trail, so it pairs naturally with Telok Blangah Hill Park a short way west. Labrador Park MRT (CC27) on the Circle Line is the nearest station, roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk via Alexandra Road, and approaching on foot from that side lets you see the hexagonal stacking across the greenery rather than head-on from the driveway.
The single most common mistake is turning up at the gate expecting to walk in like a park — you can't, security turns non-residents away, and there is no viewing deck. The stacked form only makes sense from elevation or distance, so the worthwhile shots come from the higher ground of Telok Blangah Hill Park or from the pavement along Alexandra Road and Depot Road, not from standing at the entrance looking up at one block.
