Chinese Garden sits on the northern edge of Jurong Lake Gardens in the west of Singapore, reached in about five minutes on foot from Chinese Garden MRT (EW25).
Three things to know first
The old standalone Chinese Garden is now a zone within Jurong Lake Gardens, and it reopened on 8 September 2024. Any guide describing it as closed for redevelopment is out of date.
Come on a Monday and both indoor galleries are shut, along with Clusia Cove, Forest Ramble and the skatepark. The gardens themselves stay open.
The free garden shuttle runs weekdays only, 9.30am to 4.30pm — so there is none at the weekend, when it is busiest.
It is a free public park built in a classical northern-Chinese style, with a seven-storey pagoda, a pair of Twin Pagodas, a 13-arch stone bridge and a Suzhou-style Bonsai Garley displaying over 2,000 trees. The gates are open from 5.30am to midnight daily, though the individual attractions keep shorter hours and the Bonsai Gallery closes on Mondays for maintenance.
The garden reopened in September 2024 after a long refurbishment that folded it into the wider Jurong Lake Gardens, so paths, planting and water features are all recently redone rather than tired. It shares the same lakeside network as the Japanese Garden next door, and the two are easily walked together in one visit.
The Bonsai Gallery, which holds the 2,000-plus tree Suzhou-style collection that is the main reason to come, is shut every Monday except public holidays, so a Monday visit gets you the pagodas and bridges but a locked door where the best part is. Come Tuesday to Sunday between 9am and 7pm to see all of it.
