Haw Par Villa

Haw Par Villa sits on Pasir Panjang Road in the west, a hillside park of painted statues and dioramas built in 1937 by the family behind Tiger Balm to illustrate Chinese folklore and Confucian morality.

FREE TO WALK IN

The park has always been free to walk into — but read the closure warning, and know that the Ten Courts of Hell are no longer free: they now sit inside the ticketed Hell's Museum.

⚠ HEADS UP

The park has been partially closed for maintenance since 8 December 2025 and remains so until further notice. Hell's Museum, including the Ten Courts of Hell, stays open — but do not describe the whole park as walkable, and check the operator's site before going.

NOTE

Parental guidance is advised for children under nine — the Ten Courts of Hell depict graphic punishments in detail.

NOTE

Part of the museum is open to the weather, so take an umbrella. No food, drink or pets inside.

Walking the grounds is free, and the outdoor tableaux — deities, legends, the odd giant crab — cost nothing to see. The one part that is ticketed is Hell's Museum, the indoor gallery that now houses the famous Ten Courts of Hell, where sinners are shown being sawn, boiled and ground for their earthly misdeeds; entry is $20 for adults and $10 for children aged 7–12. Note that the park has been partially closed for repair works since December 2025, though Hell's Museum stays open throughout.

It is one Circle Line stop from Kent Ridge Park and the western end of the Southern Ridges. Take Exit A from Haw Par Villa MRT (CC25) on the Circle Line and the park entrance is a one-to-two-minute walk directly across; there is no visitor car park on site, so drivers use the ORTO lot on West Coast Highway.

★ WORTH KNOWING

The common mistake is expecting the Ten Courts of Hell to be free, as it was for decades — those dioramas are now inside the ticketed Hell's Museum, not out in the open park. If you are a Singaporean aged 18 or over you can pay for that ticket with Culture Pass credits rather than cash, and once inside, the complimentary highlight tours run several times a day (from 10:30am) on a first-come basis at the lobby counter.

Rain, heat, and what to do about it

Live readings and forecasts from NEA. Four days is the limit — past that, nobody is forecasting, they are showing you an average.

    Rain drier than average

Short, sharp early-morning showers and occasional squall lines. Drier overall than the northeast wet phase.

The other good window. Rain tends to arrive early and clear, leaving usable afternoons. This is also when haze can occur, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
