Singapore Botanic Gardens is the country's oldest garden, founded in 1859, and the only tropical garden on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
Should you go?
NParks puts it plainly: the Gardens are free entry for everyone, every day. That covers the lawns, the lakes, the Rain Forest and the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden. The one place inside you pay for is the National Orchid Garden.

Nothing to book. Orchid Garden tickets are sold at the counter by its entrance.
The main gardens are open 5am to midnight and free to enter, while the National Orchid Garden inside it is ticketed separately (8.30am–7pm, last ticket sale 6pm) and holds over a thousand orchid species and hybrids, including several named after visiting foreign dignitaries.
The Jacob Ballas Children's Garden, also inside the grounds, is a dedicated play area for children under 12 and is closed on Mondays. It sits at the Tanglin end of Orchard Road, a short bus ride or 20-minute walk from the shopping strip.
Early morning, before 8am, is when the gardens are quietest and coolest for a walk, and it's also when the resident otter families are most often seen near Swan Lake — arriving right at 5am opening is overkill, but before 8am makes a real difference.

This is wider than most people think. NParks defines local as Singapore citizens, permanent residents and those living in Singapore, including Employment Pass, Work Permit and Dependant Pass holders. NRIC, PR card or the relevant pass is checked, and seniors and students must show ID for the concession rate.
