Fort Canning Park

The park is open around the clock and costs nothing to enter, and most of what draws people is outdoors: the Gothic gates of an 1846 Christian cemetery, a replica spice garden laid out where Raffles kept his experimental plots, and the spiral staircase near Fort Canning MRT where the tree canopy closes overhead into a near-complete circle — the spot photographers gather for. Below ground is the Battle Box, the British command bunker where the 1942 surrender was decided; it reopened in February 2024 and now admits visitors free, with paid guided tours if you want the full account.

The National Museum of Singapore sits on the northeast slope, a few minutes' walk down. Enter via Fort Canning MRT (DT20) Exit B rather than climbing up from Clarke Quay — the exit lets out right at the foot of the Tree Tunnel staircase, and an escalator built into the hill carries you most of the way up towards the Battle Box and the gardens.

The Tree Tunnel — the spiral staircase where the canopy forms a ring overhead — fills with photographers from mid-morning onward. Because the park never closes and there is no gate, arriving shortly after sunrise on a weekday is the reliable way to get the frame without waiting your turn on the steps.
