NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore

NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore sits inside Gillman Barracks, the cluster of former army blocks off Alexandra Road that Singapore converted into an art enclave in the city's west.

It is no longer the standing gallery that some listings still describe: the centre ran a full exhibition programme at Block 43 Malan Road from 2013 to 2021, then restructured into a university research centre now based at Block 6 Lock Road. It keeps no permanent opening hours as a result, and instead opens a space it calls The Hall for occasional, free exhibitions — the run in early 2026, for instance, opened daily from 12.30 to 6.30pm for barely two weeks.

Entry costs nothing. It is worth the trip only when a show is on, so pair it with the commercial galleries that fill the rest of Gillman Barracks. The nearest MRT is Labrador Park on the Circle Line, but it is a good ten-minute walk from the station up into the barracks, and the Lock Road entrance where the CCA now sits is at the far end from Malan Road — head for Block 6 Lock Road, not the old 43 Malan Road address still printed on many listings.

★ WORTH KNOWING

The centre no longer keeps regular visiting hours, so turning up on a quiet weekday is the mistake to avoid — The Hall at Block 6 Lock Road opens only for the length of a specific exhibition, sometimes just a fortnight, and stays dark between shows. Check the current exhibition dates before travelling out, and treat the surrounding Gillman Barracks galleries, most of which open Tuesday to Sunday, as the reason the journey still pays off if the CCA itself is between programmes.

the thing that ruins more Singapore days than anything else

Rain, heat, and what to do about it

Live readings and forecasts from NEA. Four days is the limit — past that, nobody is forecasting, they are showing you an average.

Beyond four days · August on a 30-year average

Southwest Monsoon

June to September

Rain drier than average

Short, sharp early-morning showers and occasional squall lines. Drier overall than the northeast wet phase.

The other good window. Rain tends to arrive early and clear, leaving usable afternoons. This is also when haze can occur, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
