Windsor Nature Park is a 75-hectare stretch of secondary rainforest off Venus Drive, on the eastern edge of the Central Catchment reserve in the north.
Stay on the marked trails — NParks asks specifically, because the surrounding ground is genuine secondary forest with endangered plants.
Take shelter in bad weather and keep out of the forested sections during and just after a storm.
No bicycles, skateboards or motorised devices on the trails, and no pets or fishing.
Entry is free and the gates run 7am to 7pm daily; there is no ticket and nothing to book. The reason to come is the Drongo Trail, a 150-metre boardwalk raised about four metres over freshwater swamp forest, which puts you at sub-canopy height among dragonflies, monitor lizards and forest birds. Two shorter loops, the Hanguana and Squirrel trails, add up to a couple of gentle hours if you want more. It also works as the back-door start point for the longer walk into MacRitchie and the TreeTop Walk suspension bridge, which is why the Venus Drive car park is busier than the park's size suggests.
The two nearest stations are Upper Thomson and Bright Hill on the Thomson-East Coast Line, each a little over a kilometre away, and buses 163, 165, 167 and 855 along Upper Thomson Road drop you closest to the Venus Drive turn-off, which is an easy-to-miss side road rather than a signposted gate.
The Venus Drive car park has only about 100 lots and it doubles as the trailhead for MacRitchie's TreeTop Walk, so on weekend mornings it fills by around 8am and cars queue on the dead-end road with nowhere to turn. Come on a weekday, or arrive close to opening at 7am, which is also when the birds and the light along the Drongo boardwalk are at their best.
Live readings and forecasts from NEA. Four days is the limit — past that, nobody is forecasting, they are showing you an average.
Southwest Monsoon
June to September
Short, sharp early-morning showers and occasional squall lines. Drier overall than the northeast wet phase.
The other good window. Rain tends to arrive early and clear, leaving usable afternoons. This is also when haze can occur, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
Straight-line distance from the three places a visitor has already heard of.
