Kranji War Memorial sits on a low hill at 9 Woodlands Road in the north of Singapore, near the Malaysian border.
Two things to know first
There is no wheelchair access. The cemetery is on a hill and the only entrance is three flights of steps rising more than four metres from road level. Contact the Commission in advance if you need assistance.
It is known locally as Kranji Memorial and the Commission notes most taxi drivers do not recognise the name — give the 9 Woodlands Road address instead.
It is the Commonwealth war cemetery for the region: 4,458 marked graves on terraced lawns, and behind them the Singapore Memorial, a tall structure whose walls carry the names of more than 24,000 Allied servicemen who died across Southeast Asia and have no known grave. Entry is free and the grounds are open to the public daily, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Two other burial areas share the site — the Kranji State Cemetery, where Singapore's first president Yusof Ishak and third president Benjamin Sheares are buried, and a small Chinese Memorial to servicemen killed in February 1942.
It is a short ride from Kranji MRT, the same northern stretch of the line that also serves Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. From Kranji MRT it is roughly a 15-minute walk south along Woodlands Road to the entrance, most of it uphill and with little shade, so buses running down Woodlands Road that stop close to the gate are worth taking if you would rather skip the climb.
The Kranji State Cemetery is a separate enclosure set apart from the war graves, and it holds the graves of two Singapore presidents rather than war dead — visitors who come only for the war cemetery often walk straight past it. If that is what you have come to see, ask at the entrance for the State Cemetery section rather than stopping at the rows of headstones by the gate.
