The Malay Heritage Centre occupies the former Istana Kampong Gelam on Sultan Gate, the mid-19th-century palace of Singapore's Malay royalty, and its galleries trace the history of the Malay-Muslim community that grew up around it.

It has reopened. The centre was shut for an extensive revamp and any guide still describing it as closed for redevelopment is out of date.

The building has reopened after an extended revamp that had kept it closed since 2022, so the permanent galleries are freshly reworked rather than the display older guidebooks describe. Entry to the galleries is free for Singaporeans and permanent residents and S$10 for foreign visitors, while the surrounding compound and gardens are open to anyone without a ticket. The galleries run Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, with last admission at 5.30pm, and the centre is closed on Mondays.
It stands a few minutes' walk behind Sultan Mosque, in the heart of Kampong Glam. The nearest MRT is Bugis; leave by the exit towards Arab Street and walk down Kandahar Street, about five minutes, since Sultan Gate sits behind the mosque rather than on the busy Arab Street shopfront run.
The S$10 foreign-visitor fee only covers the indoor permanent galleries; the restored former palace, its compound and gardens are free to walk around from 8am to 9pm, so if you mainly want to see the building and grounds you can skip the ticket entirely.
