Hajjah Fatimah Mosque

It was gazetted as a national monument in 1973, and its main draw is the octagonal minaret, which leans about six degrees and is sometimes called the leaning tower of Singapore. This is a working neighbourhood mosque run by MUIS rather than a ticketed attraction, so entry is free and visitors are welcome outside the five daily prayer times. Most people come to see the tilted minaret and the mix of European, Indian and Malay detailing, which takes about fifteen minutes.

It sits roughly a ten-minute walk east of Sultan Mosque and Bussorah Street, so the two pair on a single visit. There is no visitor car park worth using; take the Circle Line to Nicoll Highway MRT and walk about ten minutes north, or catch a bus along Beach Road to the stop opposite the St John Singapore headquarters, which sits directly across from the entrance.

Unlike Sultan Mosque a few streets west, this is a quiet working mosque with almost no tour groups, so you can usually walk right up to the leaning minaret without a crowd — but it still closes to sightseers during the five daily prayers, most disruptively around midday on Friday, so aim for mid-morning or mid-afternoon on a weekday. Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering the prayer hall.
