Sultan Mosque stands at 3 Muscat Street in Kampong Glam, its gold dome the landmark the whole quarter is built around.
It is a working mosque and a National Monument, first built in the 1820s and rebuilt in the 1920s in the Indo-Saracenic style, not a museum — so non-worshippers visit around the prayers rather than through them. Walking in is free, with robes lent at the door for anyone not covered up, and the areas open to visitors are the entrance hall and the edges of the main prayer hall. The detail worth looking for is the base of each dome, ringed with the sawn-off ends of glass bottles donated by poorer members of the congregation so that everyone had a hand in the building.
It sits at the top of Bussorah Street, the pedestrian mall of cafes and shops that runs down to it. Nearest MRT is Bugis (DT14/EW12), about a 7-minute walk: leave via the Bugis Junction / Bugis Street side, head down to Bussorah Street, and enter through Gate 5, the visitor entrance facing Bussorah — not the side gates the worshippers use.
Don't buy or rent a scarf or cover-up from the shops on Bussorah Street on the way up — the mosque lends robes free at the counter just inside the visitor entrance, issued first come, first served. Note too that the walk-in visiting window is now Saturday to Thursday only (10am–12pm and 2pm–4pm); the official site no longer lists a Friday slot for sightseers, so Friday is the day to photograph the exterior rather than go in.
Live readings and forecasts from NEA. Four days is the limit — past that, nobody is forecasting, they are showing you an average.
Southwest Monsoon
June to September
Short, sharp early-morning showers and occasional squall lines. Drier overall than the northeast wet phase.
The other good window. Rain tends to arrive early and clear, leaving usable afternoons. This is also when haze can occur, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
Straight-line distance from the three places a visitor has already heard of.
