MANDAI WILDLIFE WEST

Bird Paradise Singapore: tickets, the aviaries that matter, and getting to the right entrance

Asia's largest bird park and the successor to Jurong Bird Park, rebuilt 20 km north at Mandai. Eight walk-through aviaries, more than 3,500 birds, and $49 for an adult. Four of the nine zones are the reason to make the trip.

Replaced
Jurong Bird Park, closed 3 January 2023

Bird Paradise opened at Mandai as the direct successor to Jurong Bird Park, which shut its gates for good after 52 years and 41 million visitors. The birds moved north. If you remember the Lory Loft or the raptor show from a trip in the 1990s or 2000s, they are here, rebuilt, in a park with better shade and worse public transport.

Walk-through is the operative word. Most of the park is not glass and cages; you go inside the aviary and the birds are in the air around you. That is what makes it worth a ticket rather than a pleasant hour.

The verdict: who should buy this ticket

Bird Paradise is the most photogenic park in the reserve and the easiest one to enjoy without any effort.

Birds are awake in daylight, they are loud, and they are in the air at eye level. Where Singapore Zoo asks you to look across a moat and Night Safari asks you to look into the dark, Bird Paradise puts the animal three metres from your face and it is bright yellow.

Families, photographers, repeat visitors

Buy it

If you are travelling with children under ten, if anyone in the party takes photographs, or if you have already done the zoo on a previous trip and want the Mandai day to be different. The Lory Loft alone, where lorikeets land on your arm for a cup of nectar, will justify the trip for a family.

One Mandai day, or heat is a problem

Skip it

If you have one day at Mandai and one only, and you have never been to Singapore Zoo — the zoo is the broader, more varied park and the better single choice. Also skip it if heat is a problem for you: the aviaries are shaded but the connecting paths are long and largely in the open, and there is more walking here than the map suggests.

$19 saved, best-shaped day

Bird Paradise + Night Safari

$107 as two singles against $88 on the 2 Attractions Pass, and it is the best-shaped Mandai day there is: birds in the morning light, a gap in the afternoon, nocturnal animals from six.

Only $10 better

Bird Paradise + Singapore Zoo

$98 against $88, and it puts two long walking parks at opposite entrances into one day.

Least effort

Bird Paradise + Rainforest Wild Adventure WEST

The low-effort pairing, because both are at the same WEST entrance and need no shuttle at all.

The zones, and the four that earn the walk

Nine listed zones. Four of them are the reason to come.

The current zones are Amazonian Jewels, Shaw Foundation Australian Outback, Rwanda Nyungwe Forest Heart of Africa, Hong Leong Foundation Crimson Wetlands, Kuok Group Wings of Asia, Lory Loft, Mysterious Papua, Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove and Songs of the Forest. Several carry sponsor names, so signage and maps will be longer than any list you have read elsewhere.

Entrance to Bird Paradise at Mandai Wildlife WEST, 20 Mandai Lake Road
Bird Paradise is at Mandai Wildlife WEST. The Singapore Zoo stop is a different entrance entirely.

Getting to the WEST entrance, which is not the zoo entrance

There is no MRT station at Mandai. Four stations connect by bus.

This is where visitors lose half an hour, and it is entirely avoidable: Mandai Wildlife Reserve has two addresses.

M2 Khatib Bus

Faster and simpler

  • About 20 minutes from Khatib (NS14).
  • $2.50 for an adult and $2.50 for a child aged 7 to 12, with under-7s free.
  • Daily 8:30am to midnight, every 15 minutes.
  • A private shuttle, so it is excluded from the transfer rules: the $2.50 is paid on top and it closes your fare journey.
  • Also links EAST, WEST and the resort.

Public bus 138 or 927

Cheaper, and the reason is worth understanding

  • Bus 138 from Ang Mo Kio (NS16) or Springleaf (TE4); bus 927 from Choa Chu Kang (NS4).
  • Singapore charges one distance-based fare across a whole journey, so tapping onto bus 138 within 45 minutes of leaving the MRT adds cents to the fare you were already paying rather than starting a new one.
  • An adult card fare on basic bus and train services starts at $1.28 and caps at $2.57 however far you travel.

The M2 is faster and simpler; bus 138 from Springleaf is cheaper. Both are defensible.

Shows

Kings of the Skies is retired

The two presentations at the PropNex Sky Amphitheatre are Predators on Wings and Wings of the World. Kings of the Skies belonged to Jurong Bird Park and closed with it.

What a local knows

The single most expensive mistake at Bird Paradise is the bus stop. Because the zoo has been the famous Mandai attraction for fifty years, drivers, hotel staff and older guides all default to the Singapore Zoo stop, 48131. That is Mandai Wildlife EAST, a separate address about a kilometre away along a road built for coaches rather than pedestrians. Bird Paradise is at Mandai Wildlife WEST and has its own stops, 48111 and 48119, and the free M1 shuttle that connects the two entrances does not start until 10:30am. Get off at the wrong stop on a 9:00am arrival and there is no shuttle yet to fix it.

Questions people actually ask

How much is Bird Paradise Singapore?

Standard admission is $49 for an adult and $34 for a child aged 3 to 12. Singapore residents aged 60 and above pay $25, and children under 3 enter free with a ticket-holding adult. It is priced the same as Singapore Zoo.

How many parks are there at Mandai, and which are where?

Six attractions count towards a Destination Pass: Singapore Zoo, River Wonders, Bird Paradise, Night Safari, Rainforest Wild Adventure and Exploria. Bird Paradise and the WEST zone of Rainforest Wild Adventure are at Mandai Wildlife WEST, 20 Mandai Lake Road. Everything else is at Mandai Wildlife EAST, 80 Mandai Lake Road, which is a separate entrance about a kilometre away.

Is Bird Paradise the same as Jurong Bird Park?

It is the replacement, not the same site. Jurong Bird Park closed permanently on 3 January 2023 after 52 years and the collection moved to Bird Paradise at Mandai. The Lory Loft was deliberately rebuilt to recreate the Jurong original.

Which bus stop is Bird Paradise?

Opp Bird Paradise, stop 48111, or Bird Paradise, stop 48119, both at Mandai Wildlife WEST. Do not get off at the Singapore Zoo stop, 48131; that is the EAST entrance and a different address.

How long do you need at Bird Paradise?

Four to five hours if you want both presentations and time standing still in the big aviaries. Three hours covers Lory Loft, Heart of Africa, Crimson Wetlands, Penguin Cove and one show, which is a fair visit if you have to be back in the city.

What time are the Bird Paradise shows?

Predators on Wings, the raptor presentation, is at 10:30am and 2:30pm. Wings of the World is at 12:30pm and 5:00pm. Both are at the PropNex Sky Amphitheatre. The 5:00pm slot is the least crowded and the light is best.

Can I do Bird Paradise and Night Safari on the same day?

Yes, and the 2 Attractions Pass at $88 makes it $19 cheaper than two singles. The catch is that they are at opposite entrances and the free M1 shuttle stops at 5:30pm, before Night Safari opens at 6:00pm. Use the M2 Khatib Bus to cross between WEST and EAST instead.
