The Singapore River runs through the civic district in three stretches, each with its own character: Boat Quay, packed with shophouse restaurants below Raffles Place; Clarke Quay, the bars-and-clubs strip a little upstream; and Robertson Quay, quieter and more residential further west.
One thing to know first
Clarke Quay's covered blocks are a privately managed dining complex inside the public quay, and each venue sets its own hours — some are late-night only. There is no single "Clarke Quay opening time", whatever other sites print.
Walking the riverside promenades and crossing the old bridges costs nothing, and most people come simply to eat by the water or take photographs. The one paid thing to do is the bumboat river cruise, which runs from 10.30am to 9pm daily, lasts about 40 minutes and costs SGD 28 for adults and SGD 18 for children aged three to eleven. Boats leave from jetties at Clarke Quay, Read Bridge and Clifford Pier, looping down past the Merlion at the river's mouth into Marina Bay.
It sits a few minutes' walk from the Merlion and Raffles Place. Clarke Quay MRT (North East Line, exit E) brings you out beside the main cruise jetty; for Boat Quay use Raffles Place instead, and for Robertson Quay the nearest station is Fort Canning on the Downtown Line.
Singaporean residents get a discounted cruise ticket on production of an NRIC at the jetty, but only as a walk-up purchase — buy online and you pay the full SGD 28. If you just want the view rather than the commentary, the same boats double as a point-to-point river taxi, and dinner at a Boat Quay terrace gives you the identical waterfront for the price of a meal.
