What you are actually paying for
Three things decide whether a hotel works for two people, and the pool photograph is not one of them.
Singapore is an expensive place to book a room, and couples here routinely spend the most money on the part of the hotel they will use least.
The rooftop pool photograph is what sells the booking. It is also, at two of the properties below, the busiest and least private space on the site.
What the window faces
Two of these properties can put you in a room with no window, and those are the ones most likely to sour a trip.
How quiet it is after dark
Two of the six sell you a rooftop pool that is either a public bar deck by mid-afternoon or the busiest space on the property.
Spa and restaurant on site
Sofitel Singapore Sentosa now sends guests off the property for spa treatments, and Marina Bay Sands lists no hotel spa at all.

Marina Bay Sands: the pool is real, the privacy is not
The Level 57 infinity pool and the city view are the reason you came, and the keycard is the reason to stay here rather than nearby.

The catchMarina Bay Sands states on its own site that the pool is busiest between 3pm and 6pm, and that seating, including daybeds and cabanas, is first come, first served and cannot be reserved. The cabana in the photograph is not bookable.
No guest of yours can come up either, and that is the strongest reason to stay here rather than nearby: CUT by Wolfgang Puck is the only Michelin-starred steakhouse in Singapore, and Jin Ting Wan is the highest Cantonese restaurant in the city. Marina Bay Sands lists no hotel spa, so book a couples' treatment elsewhere. Outside the door you have Gardens by the Bay over the Dragonfly Bridge, the ArtScience Museum on the same podium, and Spectra at the Event Plaza.
The Fullerton Bay Hotel: the best proposal address in the city
One hundred rooms at 80 Collyer Quay, on the water rather than beside it. If you are proposing, you are 60 seconds from the water, and that is harder to buy here than a big room.

The catchThe rooftop pool frames Lantern, and here is the part nobody writes down: mornings up there are yours, evenings belong to a bar with a dress code.
There is no spa in the building. The Fullerton Spa sits on the mezzanine of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, the city's 71st National Monument, at 1 Fullerton Square, open daily 10am to 10pm, running ESPA treatments in couple suites with en suite showers. Five minutes on foot across Fullerton Road, but it is a walk.
Foster and Partners wrapped the new building around two restored Tanah Merah colonial bungalows from the 1880s; Jaya Ibrahim did the interiors. It reads as a resort rather than a hotel, and you can spend three days here without walking into a crowd.
Capella Singapore: thirty acres, and a plunge pool of your own
One hundred and thirteen rooms, suites, villas and manors across 30 acres at 1 The Knolls on Sentosa. For couples the answer is one of the villas.

The catchThe trade-off is total. There is nothing to walk to at night; everything beyond the gates is a shuttle or a taxi.
Four of Auriga's nine treatment suites are built for two, and the separate male and female areas each carry a vitality pool, herbal steam room and ice fountain. The Warehouse Hotel states it has no spa and Marina Bay Sands lists none, Sofitel Singapore Sentosa sends guests off the property to Raffles Sentosa Spa, and the nearest spa to The Fullerton Bay Hotel is a five-minute walk away at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. Cassia does Cantonese in a room by André Fu, and Bob's Bar does sunset with laksa and chicken rice.
Sofitel Singapore Sentosa: check where the spa is before you book
Twenty-seven acres on a cliff at 2 Bukit Manis Road, laid out by Kerry Hill, with direct access down to Tanjong Beach and Sentosa Golf Club across the road.

The catchThere is no spa inside the grounds. If the plan was a couples' massage and a short walk back to your room in a robe, that does not work here.

Dining is the reason to stay in. The Cliff does southern Italian al fresco over the South China Sea, Kwee Zeen handles all-day Pan-Asian and Western, LeBar runs afternoon tea and cocktails in an open pavilion, and Maduro is a whisky and jazz bar. For a local weekend with no flight involved, this is still the easiest yes on the list.
Thirty-seven rooms at 320 Havelock Road, in a godown built in 1895 by Lim Ho Puah of the shipping company Wee Bin and Co. The road was known in Hokkien as Chiu Long Lo, Spirits Shed Street, for the arrack and toddy distilled along it, and this stretch was the city's red-light district. The hotel opened in January 2017 and belongs to Design Hotels.
The Warehouse Hotel: book a River View or do not book
An 1895 godown on the Singapore River at Robertson Quay, with the riverside restaurants starting at the door.

Arton is a three-star hotel that happens to be well placed, and pretending it is romantic is how a couple ends up in a windowless box on their anniversary. Treat it as a clean base in an interesting neighbourhood, and if the money is going on food and flights that is a defensible trade.

What a local knows
Two Singapore couples' hotels sell you a rooftop pool and only one of them is quiet at night. At The Fullerton Bay Hotel the pool is the setting for Lantern, a rooftop bar open to the public from 3pm until 1am, or 2am at weekends, with a resident DJ from 7pm to 11pm Wednesday to Saturday. Swim there before 10am. At Marina Bay Sands the pool is guests-only, but the hotel itself admits it is busiest from 3pm to 6pm and that no seat, daybed or cabana can be reserved in advance. The empty-deck photograph everyone books for exists between 6am and about 8am, and again after 10pm. Nobody tells you this because it makes the pool sound worse; knowing it is the difference between the picture and the queue.

Which Singapore hotel is best for a honeymoon?
For a first visit, Marina Bay Sands, because the Level 57 infinity pool is restricted to hotel guests by keycard and Gardens by the Bay, the ArtScience Museum and the nightly Spectra show are all a walk away. For a second or third visit, or any anniversary where quiet matters more than novelty, Capella Singapore on Sentosa: a villa with a private plunge pool, 30 acres of grounds and four dedicated couples' suites in Auriga Spa.
Can you swim in the Marina Bay Sands infinity pool without staying there?
No. Access is restricted to hotel guests and a keycard must be shown at entry. A SkyPark Observation Deck ticket gets you onto Level 56 and part of Level 57 for the view, but not into the pool, and you cannot pay for pool access separately.
Which of these hotels has a proper couples' spa on site?
Capella Singapore is the only one with dedicated couples' suites inside the property: four of Auriga's nine treatment suites are built for two. The Fullerton Bay Hotel has no spa in the building, but The Fullerton Spa is a five-minute walk away at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore and does have couple suites. Sofitel Singapore Sentosa now sends guests off the property to Raffles Sentosa Spa with a complimentary transfer. The Warehouse Hotel's own FAQ states there is no spa on the premises, and Marina Bay Sands lists none.
Is Sentosa still a good choice for couples while redevelopment is going on?
Yes, with one check. Both Capella and Sofitel Singapore Sentosa are open and trading. Sofitel carries a notice on its own site about ongoing work on its guestrooms, so ask which rooms and floors are affected while you are booking rather than on arrival.
Is a windowless hotel room ever worth it in Singapore?
For a couple, no. Two of the properties here can put you in a room without a window: The Warehouse Hotel's Warehouse Sanctuary, which the hotel lists as windowless, and Arton's Superior Queen, where a window is only subject to availability. They are the cheapest rooms in each building and they are the ones most likely to sour a trip. At the Warehouse, pay up to any River View category. At Arton, book a Deluxe King instead.

Marina Bay Sands puts Gardens by the Bay, the ArtScience Museum and the free Spectra show on your doorstep. The Fullerton Bay Hotel is a minute from Merlion Park and the Marina Bay waterfront loop. The Warehouse Hotel opens onto the Robertson Quay riverside restaurants, with Clarke Quay further along the water and Havelock MRT about eight minutes away.
