Jamae Mosque, also called Masjid Jamae Chulia, stands at 218 South Bridge Road in Chinatown, a few doors from Sri Mariamman Temple on the same stretch.
One thing to know first
Closed to visitors every Friday until 2.30pm.
It was built by the Chulias, Tamil Muslim traders from South India's Coromandel Coast, with the present building dating to the 1830s, and it has been a national monument since 1974. The front is its most recognisable feature: a pair of tall octagonal minarets topped with small onion domes, flanking a gateway that looks more like a South Indian temple front than a typical mosque. It remains a working mosque run under MUIS, so entry is free and there is no ticket, but it is a place of prayer first and sightseeing second.
A restoration finished in 2024, so the paintwork and detailing are currently in good order. Come out of Chinatown MRT at Exit A and walk down Pagoda Street to South Bridge Road; the mosque is on the corner of Mosque Street, and Maxwell station on the Thomson–East Coast Line is a similar short walk from the other direction.
This short run of South Bridge Road lets you see three faiths on one walk for nothing: Jamae Mosque, the Hindu Sri Mariamman Temple right beside it, and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple a couple of minutes further down are all free to enter. Jamae is the quietest of the three, so it is the easy one to slot in between prayer times.
