One thing to know first
STB's own visitsingapore.com still says the Chinatown Heritage Centre is closed for renovation. The operator's own site shows it open daily 10am to 8pm, with a single maintenance closure on 11 Aug 2026. We follow the operator.
It's a working neighbourhood as much as a sight — shophouses hold everything from decades-old provision stores to newer bars and coffee shops, and street stalls sell dried goods, souvenirs and snacks side by side. Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, sits a block away, a reminder that the district has always mixed communities rather than being purely Chinese.
There's no single opening time because it's an open district rather than one attraction — shops tend to open around 10am and stay lively into the evening, especially on weekends.
Pagoda Street and Temple Street get shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-afternoon on weekends; arriving before 10.30am or after 7pm gets photos without the crowd, and Chinatown Complex's hawker centre upstairs is a cheaper lunch than the tourist-facing ground-floor stalls.
