Buddha Tooth Relic Temple sits on South Bridge Road at the southern edge of Chinatown, a five-storey Tang-style building completed in 2007 that houses what it presents as a tooth relic of the Buddha.
One thing to know first
The temple states that the level 3 museum "may be closed to the public without prior notice", so it is not guaranteed on any given day.
Entry is free. The ground-floor hall, lined with a hundred seated Buddha figures, is what most people photograph, but the relic itself is kept in a gold stupa on the fourth floor, open to the public from 9am to 6pm and closed to cameras. There is also a museum of Buddhist art on the third floor and a rooftop garden reached by lift, both quieter than the street below. Prayer services run through the day, and a free English guided tour is offered on Saturday afternoons.
Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, stands almost directly opposite. Skip the Chinatown MRT crush on Pagoda Street — Maxwell station (Thomson-East Coast Line, TE18) Exit 2 opens almost directly opposite the temple on South Bridge Road, under a two-minute walk.
Most visitors stop at the ground-floor hall and leave, missing the two best parts, both free: the fourth-floor Sacred Light Hall, where the tooth relic sits in a 3,500kg gold stupa and stays open to the public until 6pm (no photography inside), and the rooftop garden above it, reached by a lift most tour groups never take, which holds a large prayer wheel and is the calmest spot in the building. Shawls to cover shoulders and knees are lent free at the entrance, so shorts needn't turn you away.
