St Andrew's Cathedral stands on St Andrew's Road at the edge of the Padang, a white Gothic Revival church that is the largest cathedral in Singapore and a working Anglican place of worship rather than a museum.
Two things to know first
The free guided tours cap at six people and run on only three mornings a week. Book ahead rather than turning up.
It is a working cathedral with services, weddings and funerals, so parts may be in use.
It has been a national monument since 1973, and the walls owe their whiteness to Madras chunam, a plaster made from crushed shell, egg white and sugar. Entry is free and the building is open daily from 7am to 8pm, while a separate Welcome Centre (Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm) runs free heritage tours on set mornings. The nave reopened at the end of 2023 after more than two years of structural restoration, so the interior is in good order.
It sits directly across the road from the National Gallery Singapore, housed in the former City Hall, a two-minute walk away. The quiet way in is the gate beside City Hall MRT Exit B, which drops you onto the cathedral lawn from the Padang side rather than sending you round by the main road.
The free guided tours are small and infrequent: three fixed slots a week (Tuesday and Thursday at 11am in English, Wednesday at 10am in Chinese), each capped at six people. Turning up on spec rarely lines up with one, so if the tour rather than the building is the point of your visit, email the Welcome Centre ahead to book or to arrange a group time.
