Lasalle College of the Arts

Lasalle College of the Arts occupies a single block at 1 McNally Street, on the edge of Little India, and the building is the reason non-students stop by: six irregular glass towers leaning over a central "canyon" that the public can walk straight into.

HOURS

The draw for a visitor is the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (ICAS), the college's public gallery arm, which runs five spaces — Gallery 1, the Earl Lu Gallery, the Brother Joseph McNally Gallery, the Praxis Space and the Project Space — with a rotating programme of local and international shows. Admission is free and the galleries open Monday to Saturday, noon to 7pm, closing on Sundays and public holidays.

Between shows there is not always something hanging, so it is worth checking what is on before making a trip. Tekka Centre and the Little India shophouses are a few minutes' walk northwest. The nearest station is Rochor on the Downtown Line, about a three-minute walk over Rochor Canal Road; Little India MRT (North East and Downtown lines) is a slightly longer walk from the Tekka side if you are already in the quarter.

★ WORTH KNOWING

The catch most listings miss is that the galleries close on Sundays and public holidays, unlike almost every national museum in Singapore — so a weekend visitor should come on Saturday, not Sunday. Time it for the graduation-show seasons (roughly May, and again July into August), when all five galleries fill at once with degree exhibitions across fine art, design and film, still free to walk through.

the thing that ruins more Singapore days than anything else

Rain, heat, and what to do about it

Live readings and forecasts from NEA. Four days is the limit — past that, nobody is forecasting, they are showing you an average.

Beyond four days · August on a 30-year average

Southwest Monsoon

June to September

Rain drier than average

Short, sharp early-morning showers and occasional squall lines. Drier overall than the northeast wet phase.

The other good window. Rain tends to arrive early and clear, leaving usable afternoons. This is also when haze can occur, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
