Katong Antique House

Katong Antique House is a private Peranakan collection at 208 East Coast Road, kept in a two-storey Straits Chinese shophouse rather than run as a public museum.

One thing to know first

⚠ HEADS UP

Do not list this as a visitable attraction yet. There is no operator website at all — not a broken one, none — and the sole proprietor who personally led every tour died in 2018 with no successor publishing anything since. The building may still stand as a shopfront without functioning as a museum. Every price circulating online comes from resellers and blogs.

It is not a walk-in: visits are by appointment, take the form of a guided tour of roughly 45 minutes, and cost about S$15 a person, so you phone ahead on 6345 8544 rather than turning up at the door. Inside is the lifetime collection of the late Peter Wee, a fourth-generation Peranakan and former president of the Peranakan Association Singapore, now shown by his associates: beaded slippers, kebaya, surname lanterns, porcelain, tiles and carved furniture, usually with a beadwork demonstration and a taste of kueh.

It sits on the Katong stretch of East Coast Road, a few minutes' walk from the i12 Katong mall and the restored shophouses of Joo Chiat. Since the Thomson-East Coast Line reached the district in June 2024, the nearest station is now Marine Parade (TE26); come up beside i12 Katong and walk the short block to East Coast Road, rather than the longer haul from Dakota or Eunos that older guides still send you on.

★ WORTH KNOWING

This is not a browse-it-yourself museum; the whole point is the guided commentary from the family friends who now run it, so come with questions and allow the full three-quarters of an hour rather than expecting a quick look. Because it is one collector's house opened by appointment, confirm your slot by phone before travelling — the daily hours shown on various listings are unreliable, and without a booking the door stays shut.

the thing that ruins more Singapore days than anything else

Rain, heat, and what to do about it

Live readings and forecasts from NEA. Four days is the limit — past that, nobody is forecasting, they are showing you an average.

Beyond four days · August on a 30-year average

Southwest Monsoon

June to September

Rain drier than average

Short, sharp early-morning showers and occasional squall lines. Drier overall than the northeast wet phase.

The other good window. Rain tends to arrive early and clear, leaving usable afternoons. This is also when haze can occur, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
