Dalhousie Obelisk

The government surveyor John Turnbull Thomson designed it after Cleopatra's Needle on the Thames, and its faces carry inscriptions tied to the free-trade policy that shaped early Singapore. It is an open-air monument with no gate and no ticket, so it is free and reachable at any hour, and most people give it a couple of minutes rather than a trip in its own right. The reason to stop is where it sits — between the Asian Civilisations Museum and Cavenagh Bridge, on the riverside walk that links the civic district's museums to Boat Quay across the water.

Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall is a two-minute walk inland. The closest MRT is Raffles Place — leave by Exit H onto the north bank, and the short walk across the pedestrian-only Cavenagh Bridge lands you at the obelisk beside the Asian Civilisations Museum, quicker than routing down from City Hall.

Treat it as a two-minute stop folded into the Empress Place riverfront walk rather than a destination in its own right: the payoff is reading the four inscribed faces, which set out the free-trade argument Dalhousie's visit was taken to endorse, not the plain pillar itself, and it is easy to walk straight past it under the trees between the museum and the bridge.
