Capitol Singapore stands on Stamford Road in the civic district, a restored 1930s development that now folds the Capitol Theatre, the Capitol Kempinski Hotel, an arcade of shops and restaurants and a set of residences behind one heritage frontage.
One thing to know first
The Capitol Theatre interior — including the hand-painted zodiac ceiling that is the building's best feature — is only seen if you attend an event. It has no public viewing hours.
There is no ticket to walk in: the arcade, the hotel lobby and the restored facades are open to anyone, and you pay only if you book a show at the theatre or a table at one of the restaurants. The theatre itself opened in 1930 as one of the region's grandest cinemas, closed in 1998, and reopened in 2015 after a long restoration; it now stages concerts and musicals rather than films, and its gilded zodiac ceiling is only visible to ticket-holders during a performance.
City Hall MRT sits directly across the road, which makes this an easy pause between the National Gallery and St Andrew's Cathedral. City Hall MRT (North-South and East-West lines) surfaces almost at the door on the Stamford Road corner — take the St Andrew's Cathedral exit and the Capitol frontage is a 100-metre walk directly across the road.
The restored theatre interior — the vaulted, gold-leaf zodiac ceiling in particular — is not on any daytime walk-through; the only way inside is to hold a ticket for a scheduled concert or musical, so check the theatre's listings before you go rather than turning up expecting a museum. Everything else — the arcade, the restored heritage exteriors and the hotel lobby — costs nothing to look at.
