Which one, and what for
Marina Bay holds three separate hotel clusters
Booking the wrong side of the water is the easiest mistake to make here.
Every hotel here will tell you it is in Marina Bay. They are all telling the truth and they are all in different places.
The bay is a body of water with a promenade around it, and the walk from one side to the other is about half an hour. Which cluster you book decides your view, your station and your evening.
Bayfront
Marina Bay Sands, alone on reclaimed land, with Bayfront station (DT16 on the Downtown Line, CC34 on the Circle Line) underneath it and Gardens by the Bay behind it.
Marina Centre
The block of Raffles Boulevard and Raffles Avenue on the north-east shoulder of the bay. Three large hotels sit here in a row, threaded together by three shopping malls and served by Promenade (CC4, DT15), Esplanade (CC3) and City Hall (EW13, NS25).
Collyer Quay and the Civic District
The west side, where the bay meets the Singapore River and the old colonial core. This is where the heritage buildings are, and where the hotels are older than the view.
Marina Bay Sands: for the pool, and only really for the pool
The reason to book here is the SkyPark Infinity Pool, which is reserved for room and suite guests. Staying in the building is the only way to swim in it, and that is worth more than it sounds.

The catchThe sea-facing rooms are the cheapest kind of disappointment: the view is container ships on the anchorage, which is genuinely interesting for about ten minutes. Ask for the city or Gardens orientation.
The rooms are sold as the Sands Collection, and run from the Sands Premier Room, which has a two-person bathtub and separate vanities, up through the Sands Bay Suite, Sands Premier Suite, Sands Family Suite and Sands Signature Suite. Each room has a bespoke armoire stocked with teas, wines and snacks, a walk-in wardrobe and a marble bathroom with double vanities.
Sands Family Suite
A separate children's room with bunk beds and a kitchenette, which is the most practical family configuration in the whole cluster.
Sands Signature Suite
Three variations, with a media room, an entertainment den or a pool room, plus a social bar and a six-seater dining table, so it functions as a place to host rather than a place to sleep.
Who it suits: first-time visitors on a short trip who want the landmark experience, families who need the Family Suite layout, and anyone for whom the pool is the holiday. Who it does not suit: anyone who dislikes walking through a casino and a luxury mall to reach their lift lobby, and anyone who wants to feel like they are in Singapore rather than in a resort.
Marina Centre: the three big hotels on Raffles Boulevard and Raffles Avenue
Set back from the water, joined to each other by malls, and near-identical from the outside.
The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore
It has two things nothing else here has. The first is the art, roughly 4,200 works, about 90 per cent of them commissioned for the building, which makes the public areas worth walking even if you are not staying. The second is the octagonal bathroom window in every guest room, a design decision built around the number eight, which means you can lie in the bath looking at the bay.

Pan Pacific Singapore
Next door to the Ritz-Carlton and built around a tall internal atrium. It has the strongest mall connection of any hotel here. There are sixteen room categories, which is a lot, and the ones that matter are the Premier and Executive Marina Bay rooms and the Pacific Club rooms.

PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay
The plants are the point here: over 2,400 of them inside the building. Rooms run from Urban Deluxe and Lifestyle Premier to Signature Marina Bay rooms and suites, and there are two gnome-themed children's rooms, which are a genuinely good reason to bring a young family here rather than to a standard business hotel.

The Fullerton Hotel
The grand neoclassical Fullerton Building of 1928, gazetted as a National Monument in December 2015, and previously Singapore's General Post Office, the Exchange, the Chamber of Commerce and the Singapore Club.

The catchThe Courtyard rooms are the trap. They are inside a beautiful atrium and they have no outside view at all, and on a first visit to Singapore that is the wrong room. Move up to Quay or Marina Bay View, or stay somewhere else.
The Fullerton Bay Hotel
The modern sibling, where the room grades sort themselves by how much of the bay you actually see. The rooftop holds the pool and Lantern, the bar that has the best sightline in Singapore of the light show over the water without you having to be in the show.

The Civic District edge: Swissotel, Fairmont and Raffles
Swissotel The Stamford
One of the tallest hotels in Southeast Asia. City Hall MRT is at the door, the hotel connects directly into the Raffles City Convention Centre, and most rooms have private balconies.

Raffles Singapore
A colonial city-centre hotel on Beach Road, a walk back from the bay whatever it gets shortlisted for. Book it for the building and for the food and drink line-up, which is the deepest in the country.

The catchIf your main reason for coming to Marina Bay is the bay, this is the wrong hotel. It suits an anniversary, a milestone, or a traveller who wants the hotel to be the destination.
The pools, honestly
SkyPark Infinity Pool
Obviously. Room and suite guests only, and the only way to swim in it is to stay in the building.
The rooftop pool
Small, quiet, and it looks straight across the water at the Sands, which is the better half of that view.
Willow Stream
Worth planning a day around, if you count a spa's water facilities as a pool.
The rest are competent hotel pools on a podium deck. Nothing wrong with them, but do not pay a premium for one, and do not book a Marina Centre hotel expecting a swim with a view. The towers are set back from the water and the pool decks look at other buildings.
The 10pm problem
Marina Bay is the emptiest central district in Singapore at night, and it catches first-time visitors out.
The office towers close, Marina Square and Millenia Walk shut, Suntec City winds down, and the promenade turns into a jogging route. If you arrive back at your hotel at 10pm hungry, your options are your own hotel's outlets, the Sands food hall across the water, or a taxi.

What a local knows
The pedestrian route between the Marina Centre hotels and Marina Bay Sands is not the one the map suggests. Rather than walking the open promenade past the Esplanade, go underground: the link from City Hall through Raffles City and City Link Mall runs air-conditioned almost the whole way to the Marina Centre basements, and from Promenade you can stay inside Millenia Walk and Marina Square until you are level with the Youth Olympic Park. That leaves only the Helix Bridge in the open. In a 32-degree afternoon it is the difference between arriving at the Sands presentable and arriving soaked, and it is the reason the Marina Centre hotels are a better bet in the rainy months than a bay-view room across the water.
Questions people actually ask
Which Marina Bay hotel has the best view?
Depends which direction you want to look. Rooms at Marina Bay Sands look down on the city, the Gardens or the sea, but you cannot see the Sands itself, which is the shot most people actually want. For that, book a bay-view room at The Fullerton Bay Hotel or a Marina Bay View room at The Fullerton, or take a balcony room at Swissotel The Stamford or Fairmont and look down the length of the bay.
Is Raffles Singapore in Marina Bay?
No. It is at 1 Beach Road in the Civic District, back from the water. It gets shortlisted for Marina Bay constantly, but it is a Civic District hotel and its view is the building itself. If proximity to the water is the point of your trip, the Collyer Quay or Bayfront hotels are the right answer.
Which Marina Bay hotel is best for families?
Two answers. Marina Bay Sands, if you book the Sands Family Suite, because it has a separate children's room with bunk beds and a kitchenette. Or PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay, which has two gnome-themed children's rooms and an indoor garden, and sits within a short covered walk of three malls.
Do I need to stay at Marina Bay Sands to use the infinity pool?
Yes. Access to the SkyPark Infinity Pool is for hotel room and suite guests. The observation deck on the same SkyPark is a separate paid ticket that anyone can buy, but it is not the pool.
Is Marina Bay a good place to eat at night?
It is the weakest central district for it. The office towers and the Marina Centre malls close in the evening and the promenade has very little food on it, so late arrivals end up in a hotel outlet or the Marina Bay Sands food hall. Hotels near City Hall have the best fallback, because Purvis Street, Seah Street and North Bridge Road are a short walk.
Which room should I avoid at The Fullerton Hotel?
The Premier Courtyard rooms. They face into the hotel's internal atrium, which is beautiful and has no outside view whatsoever. On a first visit, pay up to a Quay room over the Singapore River or a Marina Bay View room.
