In a country which seems to have imported the best of the world’s cuisines, you might not initially be surprised to find food from Australia. After all, Australia is a country which is itself at the forefront of culinary endeavour and famous for those prize ingredients which find their way into myriad dishes which take from the world’s vast menu and make them something idiosyncratic and wholly delicious.

Barossa is located on Singapore’s Esplanade, one of the nation’s most vibrant and culturally exciting hotspots. This unique and inviting eatery supplies a wealth of charm, convivial atmosphere and is fast becoming the preferred place for good food and wine for those who are looking for something special and different. The restaurant itself offers two distinct moods. The indoor area is a beautifully designed space with a capacity for up to 60 diners, with the welcome addition of a raised platform for private dining for 8-10 people. The Long Bar is a prominent feature of the indoor area, and has become very popular with locals who come to shed the day’s concerns and enjoy a drink and good company. The Long Bar also boasts two large flat screen televisions with sport channels and MTV.

The vibrant indoor ambiance is contrasted with the marvellous Al Fresco area, which supplies a gentle, rustic space for getting together and sharing food with friends under the friendly sky. No matter which space appeals to you, you’ll be able to enjoy a wonderful selection of food and drink. The wine list is certainly worth a mention, since it is almost entirely comprised of Australia’s best offerings, which, as any acolyte of New World wines will know, is quite a thing. There is something for every mood and budget, from the country’s most familiar and accessible bottles to the little known speciality bottles from boutique wineries. Not all the tipples on the wine list are from Australia though; those looking for a fine French Champagne will find the best of the bunch.

Whether just in for a glass of good wine or celebratory Champagne, you’ll certainly want to engage one or two of the magnificent dishes on the menu. Australia’s seafood is world famous, and you can expect delicacies like Southern Coast Black Mussels cooked in spicy tomato sauce served with freshly grilled country bread and fresh market catch of the day. If your taste leans more towards the succulent meaty side of things, then the Grilled Tasmanian Rack of Lamb and Grilled “stockyard” 200 days Angus prime rib, perhaps with a glass of fine Australian Shiraz to bring out the nuances of this beautifully crafted dish.

Barossa also serves up bar grubs such as shrimp paste wings, mini fish and chips, wedges, calamari, mini wagyu beef burger to complement the types of Australian beers, cocktails, mocktails and mojitos. One thing worth mentioning to mojito fans is that there are a total of 13 different types of mojito served in different flavors.

Those who have wisely left room for a final sweet touch would do well to sample the famous Barossa Baked Bomb-Alaska, an ice cream dish with marshmallows and set aflame with grand marnier, then doused in chocolate – a rare treat. Whether for a quick bite en route to one of the many events or cultural distractions in or near Singapore’s lovely Esplanade, or a full meal with every aspect of friendly, professional service, Barossa is the place for those who value the rare combination of great food, superlative wine, and an atmosphere conducive to good living – Australia style.
