CHIJMES

Chijmes: A Unique Destination in Singapore

Chijmes is a popular tourist destination located in the heart of Singapore’s downtown district. It is a stunning architectural landmark with a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. The complex of buildings that make up Chijmes was originally built as a Catholic convent school and was home to nuns who devoted their lives to educating young girls.

A Historical and Architectural Marvel

The site of Chijmes is made up of several buildings, each built at different times in different architectural styles. The main building, which is the centerpiece of the complex, was built in the Gothic Revival style in 1852. This building was originally the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ), a Catholic girls’ school that was established in Singapore in 1854.

Over the years, several other buildings were added to the complex, including an orphanage and a dormitory. The orphanage was built in the 1930s, and the dormitory was added in the 1950s. These buildings were constructed in a more modern architectural style, but still maintained the overall aesthetic of the complex.

The Gothic chapel is another important part of Chijmes. This stunning structure was built in 1904 and is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Singapore. The chapel features intricate stained-glass windows, a vaulted ceiling, and ornate carvings, making it a popular location for weddings and other special events.

From Abandonment to Restoration

In the 1980s, the CHIJ Convent School moved to a new location, and the Chijmes complex was abandoned for several years. However, in the early 1990s, the Singapore government decided to restore the complex and transform it into a commercial space. The restoration process was extensive and took several years to complete, but in 1996, Chijmes was officially reopened as a commercial and entertainment complex.

Commercial and Entertainment Haven

Today, Chijmes is home to a variety of stores, bars, and restaurants. The complex has retained much of its original charm and character, with many of the original features of the buildings still intact. Visitors to Chijmes can explore the various shops and boutiques, dine at one of the many restaurants, or enjoy a drink at one of the bars or cafes.

One of the most popular attractions at Chijmes is the outdoor courtyard. This stunning space is surrounded by the Gothic buildings and features a beautiful fountain and a variety of lush greenery. The courtyard is a popular spot for events and is often used as a venue for concerts and other performances.

A Place for Celebrations and Events

Chijmes is also a popular location for weddings and other special events. The Gothic chapel is a particularly popular spot for weddings, and many couples choose to have their ceremony and reception at Chijmes. The complex also has several event spaces that can be rented out for corporate events and other private functions.

A Gastronomic Delight

Chijmes is home to a diverse range of restaurants offering a variety of cuisines to suit every palate. From fine dining restaurants to casual eateries and bars, visitors can enjoy an unforgettable dining experience in the beautiful and historic surroundings of this former Catholic convent school. With its Gothic architecture and charming courtyards, Chijmes provides a unique and picturesque backdrop for an unforgettable culinary adventure.
